Sonora has 72 municipalities and about 3,028,969 people (2025) on 180,399 km² (69,652 sq mi). Hermosillo is both the capital and the largest city, with 855,563 people (2020). It borders Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa and United States.
Hermosillo is the most populous municipality (962,020 people) and Oquitoa the least (321); Hermosillo is the largest by area (16,936 km²) and San Felipe de Jesús the smallest (151 km²).

The state's total on the Mexico map, 3,049,889, also counts the 20,920 people INEGI estimates in collective dwellings and without a dwelling, which it publishes only for the whole state. Towns are INEGI's localities with their 2020 Census population: every municipal seat and every other locality of 5,000 people or more.
