About the State of Mexico
The State of Mexico has 125 municipalities and about 17,561,797 people (2025) on 22,352 km² (8,630 sq mi). The capital is Toluca; the largest city is Ecatepec, with 1,643,623 people (2020). It borders Guerrero, Hidalgo, Mexico City, Michoacán, Morelos, Puebla, Querétaro and Tlaxcala.
Ecatepec de Morelos is the most populous municipality (1,652,119 people) and Otzoloapan the least (4,449); Tlatlaya is the largest by area (789 km²) and Papalotla the smallest (3.2 km²).

The state's total on the Mexico map, 17,612,480, also counts the 50,683 people INEGI estimates in collective dwellings and without a dwelling, which it publishes only for the whole state. Towns are INEGI's localities with their 2020 Census population: every municipal seat and every other locality of 5,000 people or more.
