Learn Mexico’s 31 state capitals
Mexico has 31 states and Mexico City, a separate federal entity and the national capital. This quiz covers the 31 state capitals only. The capital of Estado de México is Toluca, not Mexico City; the two entities should not be confused.
The biggest or best-known city is not always the capital. Baja California’s capital is Mexicali rather than Tijuana, Quintana Roo’s is Chetumal rather than Cancún, and Guerrero’s is Chilpancingo rather than Acapulco.
Short names and full city names both work
Use common names such as Puebla, Oaxaca, Querétaro and Tlaxcala, or their longer forms Puebla de Zaragoza, Oaxaca de Juárez, Santiago de Querétaro and Tlaxcala de Xicohténcatl. Accents are optional in typed answers.
Start with 10 capitals, then choose 25 or all 31 as you improve. The state outline helps you recognise the region, while the marker shows where its capital sits. Review missed capitals after your round to practise the pairings that need more work.
