This privacy policy describes how geographyquiz.io (“we”, “us”, or “our”) collects, uses, and shares information when you visit or use our website and quizzes (the “Service”). By using the Service, you acknowledge this policy.

1. Who we are

geographyquiz.io is a free browser-based geography quiz site. We offer map quizzes, capital quizzes, flag quizzes, and similar learning games. We do not operate a paid membership product and we do not require you to create an account to play.

2. Information we collect

We aim to collect as little personal information as practical. In particular:

• Optional account and daily progress. If you choose Google sign-in, Firebase Authentication processes your Google account identifier, name, email address, and profile picture. We save your daily quiz attempts and results in Cloud Firestore to restore your progress, calculate streaks, and show your history across devices. We do not receive your Google password. If you choose email/password sign-in, Firebase Authentication manages your email address and password credentials, including password-reset emails. We do not save passwords in quiz history, analytics, or our Firestore database. You can still play without an account.
• Usage and analytics data. We use analytics and may track how the Service is used in an anonymous or aggregated way. This can include pages viewed, quizzes started or finished, words entered into site search, search results selected, referral sources, approximate location at a coarse level (such as country), device or browser category, and similar technical signals.
• Log and performance data. Our hosting provider may process standard server or edge logs needed to deliver pages, prevent abuse, and monitor reliability.
• Information you choose to share. If you contact us through a channel we publish in the future, we will receive whatever you send in that message.

We do not intentionally collect special category data, payment card details, or government ID numbers through the quizzes themselves.

3. How we use information

We use the information above to:

• Operate, maintain, and secure the Service
• Save and sync daily quiz progress when you choose to sign in
• Understand which quizzes and pages are popular
• Measure traffic, performance, and errors
• Improve content, maps, and overall experience
• Detect spam, abuse, or technical problems
• Comply with law where we are required to do so

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use quiz play history to build an advertising profile of you as an individual.

4. Hosting and analytics providers

We use Google Firebase for optional Google or email/password sign-in and saved daily progress. Our Cloud Firestore database is in London (europe-west2). Authentication and supporting services may process data internationally.

The Service is hosted on Vercel. We use Vercel Analytics and may use related Vercel products (for example performance or speed tooling) to understand traffic and usage. These providers process data on our behalf in order to provide hosting and analytics. Their handling of data is also governed by their own terms and privacy documentation.

Anonymous or aggregated usage tracking may also be implemented directly in the Service so we can see, for example, which quizzes people open. That tracking is intended for product insight, not for identifying you personally.

5. Cookies and similar technologies

Quiz recommendations can use up to 60 recent plays from the last 30 days, including scores, modes and round lengths, stored in your browser. This history is not linked to your sign-in account. Suggestions also use a country-level location hint and aggregated quiz outcomes. Our Cloudflare recommendation service stores random quiz-run and suggestion identifiers, scores and interaction events for up to 30 days, followed by daily cleanup. We also measure anonymous site-session duration and page count while the site is visible, excluding background-tab time. Site search terms and selected results are stored for up to 30 days so we can improve search and decide which quizzes to build. Do not enter personal information into search. The service does not receive your name, email or answers typed into quizzes. Network providers still process technical request information to deliver and protect the service. Clearing the history below does not delete previously collected aggregate statistics.

We use browser storage to remember daily progress and, if you sign in, to keep your sign-in session. Hosting, security, or analytics tools may still use cookies, local storage, pixels, or similar technologies where needed to run or measure the Service. You can usually control cookies through your browser settings. Blocking some cookies may affect parts of site measurement or functionality.

6. Sharing of information

We may share information in these limited situations:

• With service providers who help us host, analyze, or protect the Service (including Vercel and Google Firebase), subject to appropriate agreements
• If required by law, regulation, legal process, or a valid governmental request
• To protect the rights, safety, or integrity of the Service or its users
• In connection with a merger, acquisition, or transfer of assets, where permitted by law

7. Retention

Analytics and log data are retained for as long as needed for the purposes described above, including security, reporting, and product improvement, unless a longer period is required by law. Saved account history is retained until you delete your account. Open Your daily progress and select Delete my account and history to remove your Firebase account and cloud saves. Local guest progress can be removed by clearing this site's browser storage.

8. International processing

The Service may be hosted or processed in countries other than the one where you live, including through Vercel's global infrastructure. Those countries may have different data protection rules from your own.

9. Children

The Service is a general audience geography learning site. It is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please stop that use of the Service and we will delete the information if we become aware of it and it is reasonably identifiable.

10. Your choices

You can choose not to use the Service. You can also use browser controls to limit cookies or tracking where available. Because much of our measurement is anonymous or aggregated, we may not be able to identify a specific individual's analytics record on request.

11. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised policy.

12. Scope

This policy applies to geographyquiz.io and the quizzes we operate there. It does not apply to third-party websites that may link to or from the Service.
