Zacatecas has 58 municipalities and about 1,681,468 people (2025) on 75,275 km² (29,064 sq mi). The capital is Zacatecas; the largest city is Guadalupe, with 170,029 people (2020). It borders Aguascalientes, Coahuila, Durango, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Nayarit, Nuevo León and San Luis Potosí.
Fresnillo is the most populous municipality (246,916 people) and Susticacán the least (1,231); Mazapil is the largest by area (12,117 km²) and Vetagrande the smallest (160 km²).

The state's total on the Mexico map, 1,686,419, also counts the 4,951 people INEGI estimates in collective dwellings and without a dwelling, which it publishes only for the whole state. Towns are INEGI's localities with their 2020 Census population: every municipal seat and every other locality of 5,000 people or more.
