About Hidalgo

Hidalgo has 84 municipalities and about 3,237,527 people (2025) on 20,821 km² (8,039 sq mi). Pachuca is both the capital and the largest city, with 297,848 people (2020). It borders Puebla, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, State of Mexico, Tlaxcala and Veracruz.

Pachuca de Soto is the most populous municipality (317,480 people) and Eloxochitlán the least (2,317); Zimapán is the largest by area (872 km²) and Tlahuelilpan the smallest (32 km²).

The state's total on the Mexico map, 3,245,595, also counts the 8,068 people INEGI estimates in collective dwellings and without a dwelling, which it publishes only for the whole state. Towns are INEGI's localities with their 2020 Census population: every municipal seat and every other locality of 5,000 people or more.
