About Mexico

Mexico has 32 states and about 130,911,314 people (2025) on 1,962,292 km² (757,645 sq mi). Mexico City is both the capital and the largest city, with 9,209,944 people (2020). It borders United States, Guatemala and Belize.

State of Mexico is the most populous state (17,612,480 people) and Colima the least (762,212); Chihuahua is the largest by area (247,413 km²) and Mexico City the smallest (1,485 km²).

State and national populations are INEGI's Encuesta Intercensal 2025 estimates for 15 October 2025 (the 32 states, Mexico City among them, add up to the national 130,911,314); city and town populations are 2020 Census counts for INEGI's localities, so Mexico City counts all sixteen of its boroughs, while a big city in a state, such as Guadalajara, counts its own locality and not the suburbs in neighbouring municipalities.
