Chiapas has 124 municipalities and about 5,840,294 people (2025) on 73,316 km² (28,307 sq mi). Tuxtla Gutiérrez is both the capital and the largest city, with 578,830 people (2020). It borders Oaxaca, Tabasco, Veracruz and Guatemala.

Tuxtla Gutiérrez is the most populous municipality (617,499 people) and Sunuapa the least (2,382); Ocosingo is the largest by area (9,580 km²) and Santiago el Pinar the smallest (17 km²).

The state's total on the Mexico map, 5,860,728, also counts the 20,434 people INEGI estimates in collective dwellings and without a dwelling, which it publishes only for the whole state. Towns are INEGI's localities with their 2020 Census population: every municipal seat and every other locality of 5,000 people or more.
