Tamaulipas has 43 municipalities and about 3,611,225 people (2025) on 80,271 km² (30,993 sq mi). The capital is Ciudad Victoria; the largest city is Reynosa, with 691,557 people (2020). It borders Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz and United States.
Reynosa is the most populous municipality (730,799 people) and San Nicolás the least (830); San Fernando is the largest by area (6,923 km²) and Ciudad Madero the smallest (49 km²).

The state's total on the Mexico map, 3,620,715, also counts the 9,490 people INEGI estimates in collective dwellings and without a dwelling, which it publishes only for the whole state. Towns are INEGI's localities with their 2020 Census population: every municipal seat and every other locality of 5,000 people or more.
