Veracruz has 212 municipalities and about 7,902,505 people (2025) on 71,830 km² (27,734 sq mi). Xalapa is both the capital and the largest city, with 443,063 people (2020). It borders Chiapas, Hidalgo, Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Tabasco and Tamaulipas.

Veracruz is the most populous municipality (615,780 people) and Landero y Coss the least (1,464); Las Choapas is the largest by area (3,509 km²) and Coetzala the smallest (9.4 km²).
