Tabasco has 17 municipalities and about 2,521,237 people (2025) on 24,738 km² (9,551 sq mi). Villahermosa is both the capital and the largest city, with 340,060 people (2020). It borders Campeche, Chiapas, Veracruz and Guatemala.
Centro is the most populous municipality (704,777 people) and Emiliano Zapata the least (31,488); Huimanguillo is the largest by area (3,718 km²) and Jalpa de Méndez the smallest (370 km²).

The state's total on the Mexico map, 2,527,009, also counts the 5,772 people INEGI estimates in collective dwellings and without a dwelling, which it publishes only for the whole state. Towns are INEGI's localities with their 2020 Census population: every municipal seat and every other locality of 5,000 people or more.
