Querétaro has 18 municipalities and about 2,599,947 people (2025) on 11,691 km² (4,514 sq mi). Querétaro is both the capital and the largest city, with 794,789 people (2020). It borders Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Michoacán, San Luis Potosí and State of Mexico.

Querétaro is the most populous municipality (1,091,777 people) and San Joaquín the least (8,778); Cadereyta de Montes is the largest by area (1,347 km²) and Corregidora the smallest (235 km²).

The state's total on the Mexico map, 2,606,836, also counts the 6,889 people INEGI estimates in collective dwellings and without a dwelling, which it publishes only for the whole state. Towns are INEGI's localities with their 2020 Census population: every municipal seat and every other locality of 5,000 people or more.
