Tlaxcala has 60 municipalities and about 1,417,240 people (2025) on 3,997 km² (1,543 sq mi). The capital is Tlaxcala; the largest city is Ciudad de San Pablo del Monte, with 70,224 people (2020). It borders Hidalgo, Puebla and State of Mexico.
Huamantla is the most populous municipality (104,236 people) and San Lucas Tecopilco the least (3,059); Tlaxco is the largest by area (576 km²) and San Lorenzo Axocomanitla the smallest (4.5 km²).

The state's total on the Mexico map, 1,419,482, also counts the 2,242 people INEGI estimates in collective dwellings and without a dwelling, which it publishes only for the whole state. Towns are INEGI's localities with their 2020 Census population: every municipal seat and every other locality of 5,000 people or more.
