About Yucatán

Yucatán has 106 municipalities and about 2,502,326 people (2025) on 39,761 km² (15,352 sq mi). Mérida is both the capital and the largest city, with 921,771 people (2020). It borders Campeche and Quintana Roo.

Mérida is the most populous municipality (1,053,914 people) and Quintana Roo the least (1,036); Tizimín is the largest by area (3,884 km²) and Sanahcat the smallest (26 km²).

Populations are INEGI's Encuesta Intercensal 2025 estimates for 15 October 2025 of the people living in private dwellings; the 106 municipalities add up to the state's 2,502,326. The state's total on the Mexico map, 2,506,448, also counts the 4,122 people INEGI estimates in collective dwellings and without a dwelling, which it publishes only for the whole state. Towns are INEGI's localities with their 2020 Census population: every municipal seat and every other locality of 5,000 people or more.
