About Michoacán

Michoacán has 113 municipalities and about 4,868,274 people (2025) on 58,604 km² (22,627 sq mi). Morelia is both the capital and the largest city, with 743,275 people (2020). It borders Colima, Guanajuato, Guerrero, Jalisco, Querétaro and State of Mexico.

Morelia is the most populous municipality (920,863 people) and Zináparo the least (3,029); Arteaga is the largest by area (3,434 km²) and Aporo the smallest (58 km²).

The state's total on the Mexico map, 4,889,574, also counts the 21,300 people INEGI estimates in collective dwellings and without a dwelling, which it publishes only for the whole state. Towns are INEGI's localities with their 2020 Census population: every municipal seat and every other locality of 5,000 people or more.
