About the South
The South is one of the US Census Bureau's four regions: sixteen states from Delaware and Maryland to Texas and Oklahoma (the Census region also includes Washington, D.C.).
The South has about 133,140,338 people (2025 estimate) on 2,249,692 km² (868,611 sq mi) of land. Its largest city is Houston, Texas, with 2,397,315 people.
Texas is the most populous state (31,709,821 people) and Delaware the least (1,059,952); Texas is the largest by land area (676,686 km²) and Delaware the smallest (5,047 km²).
