About Tennessee
Tennessee has 95 counties, 185 cities, 160 towns and 159 Census-designated communities, and about 7,315,076 people (2025 estimate) on 106,792 km² (41,233 sq mi) of land. Nashville is both the capital and the largest city, with 721,074 people. It borders Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina and Virginia.
Shelby County is the most populous county (910,226 people) and Pickett County the least (5,219); Shelby County is the largest by land area (1,972 km²) and Trousdale County the smallest (296 km²).
