About North Carolina

North Carolina has 100 counties, 77 cities, 451 towns, 21 villages and 223 Census-designated communities, and about 11,197,968 people (2025 estimate) on 125,936 km² (48,624 sq mi) of land. The capital is Raleigh; the largest city is Charlotte, with 964,784 people. It borders Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Wake County is the most populous county (1,257,235 people) and Tyrrell County the least (3,537); Robeson County is the largest by land area (2,453 km²) and Chowan County the smallest (447 km²).
