About Virginia

Virginia has 133 counties, 38 cities, 189 towns and 445 Census-designated communities, and about 8,880,107 people (2025 estimate) on 102,258 km² (39,482 sq mi) of land. The capital is Richmond; the largest city is Virginia Beach, with 453,737 people. It borders Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.

Fairfax County is the most populous county (1,167,873 people) and Highland County the least (2,318); Pittsylvania County is the largest by land area (2,510 km²) and City of Falls Church the smallest (5 km²).
