Charleston is both the capital and the largest city, with 46,117 people. It borders Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Kanawha County is the most populous county (172,381 people) and Wirt County the least (4,879); Randolph County is the largest by land area (2,693 km²) and Hancock County the smallest (214 km²).
