About Kentucky

Kentucky has 120 counties, 418 cities and 136 Census-designated communities, and about 4,606,864 people (2025 estimate) on 102,267 km² (39,485 sq mi) of land. The capital is Frankfort; the largest city is Louisville, with 641,962 people. It borders Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

Jefferson County is the most populous county (795,222 people) and Robertson County the least (2,325); Pike County is the largest by land area (2,036 km²) and Gallatin County the smallest (255 km²).
