About Illinois
Illinois has 102 counties, 300 cities, 16 towns, 978 villages and 168 Census-designated communities, and about 12,719,141 people (2025 estimate) on 143,778 km² (55,513 sq mi) of land. The capital is Springfield; the largest city is Chicago, with 2,731,585 people. It borders Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri and Wisconsin.
Cook County is the most populous county (5,194,625 people) and Hardin County the least (3,588); McLean County is the largest by land area (3,065 km²) and Putnam County the smallest (415 km²).
