About Iowa
Iowa has 99 counties, 939 cities and 86 Census-designated communities, and about 3,238,387 people (2025 estimate) on 144,659 km² (55,853 sq mi) of land. Des Moines is both the capital and the largest city, with 212,086 people. It borders Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.
Polk County is the most populous county (516,546 people) and Adams County the least (3,617); Kossuth County is the largest by land area (2,519 km²) and Dickinson County the smallest (986 km²).
