About South Dakota

South Dakota has 66 counties, 157 cities, 152 towns, 1 village and 167 Census-designated communities, and about 935,094 people (2025 estimate) on 196,342 km² (75,808 sq mi) of land. The capital is Pierre; the largest city is Sioux Falls, with 213,748 people. It borders Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota and Wyoming.

Minnehaha County is the most populous county (212,691 people) and Jones County the least (913); Meade County is the largest by land area (8,990 km²) and Clay County the smallest (1,067 km²).
