About Montana

Montana has 56 counties, 54 cities, 73 towns and 358 Census-designated communities, and about 1,144,694 people (2025 estimate) on 376,973 km² (145,550 sq mi) of land. The capital is Helena; the largest city is Billings, with 121,239 people. It borders Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wyoming, and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Yellowstone County is the most populous county (172,692 people) and Petroleum County the least (548); Beaverhead County is the largest by land area (14,355 km²) and Silver Bow County the smallest (1,860 km²).
