About North Dakota

North Dakota has 53 counties, 355 cities and 51 Census-designated communities, and about 799,358 people (2025 estimate) on 178,694 km² (68,994 sq mi) of land. The capital is Bismarck; the largest city is Fargo, with 136,275 people. It borders Minnesota, Montana and South Dakota, and the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Cass County is the most populous county (201,794 people) and Slope County the least (628); McKenzie County is the largest by land area (7,149 km²) and Eddy County the smallest (1,632 km²).
