About Texas

Texas has 254 counties, 970 cities, 232 towns, 22 villages and 633 Census-designated communities, and about 31,709,821 people (2025 estimate) on 676,686 km² (261,270 sq mi) of land. The capital is Austin; the largest city is Houston, with 2,397,315 people. It borders Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma, and the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Tamaulipas and Nuevo León.

Harris County is the most populous county (5,045,026 people) and Loving County the least (52); Brewster County is the largest by land area (16,016 km²) and Rockwall County the smallest (329 km²).
