About the West
The West is one of the US Census Bureau's four regions: the Mountain and Pacific divisions, thirteen states. Alaska and Hawaii are counted here and drawn on their own maps.
The West has about 80,146,154 people (2025 estimate) on 4,537,997 km² (1,752,130 sq mi) of land. Its largest city is Los Angeles, California, with 3,869,089 people.
California is the most populous state (39,355,309 people) and Wyoming the least (588,753); Alaska is the largest by land area (1,479,017 km²) and Hawaii the smallest (16,634 km²). Alaska and Hawaii are counted here and shown on their own maps.
