About the Midwest
The Midwest is one of the US Census Bureau's four regions: its East North Central and West North Central divisions, twelve states from Ohio to the Dakotas.
The Midwest has about 69,762,666 people (2025 estimate) on 1,943,998 km² (750,582 sq mi) of land. Its largest city is Chicago, Illinois, with 2,731,585 people.
Illinois is the most populous state (12,719,141 people) and North Dakota the least (799,358); Kansas is the largest by land area (211,754 km²) and Indiana the smallest (92,787 km²).
