About Northern Territory

Northern Territory has 20 local government areas and about 264,556 people (2025) on 1,348,134 km² (520,517 sq mi). Darwin is both the capital and the largest city, with 122,207 people (2021). It borders Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

Darwin is the most populous local government area (90,035 people) and Belyuen the least (167); Barkly is the largest by area (322,710 km²) and Darwin Waterfront Precinct the smallest (1 km²).
