About South Australia

South Australia has 71 local government areas and about 1,902,665 people (2025) on 984,231 km² (380,014 sq mi). Adelaide is both the capital and the largest city, with 1,245,011 people (2021). It borders New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and Northern Territory.

Onkaparinga is the most populous local government area (184,827 people) and Maralinga Tjarutja the least (102); Unincorporated SA is the largest by area (619,426 km²) and Walkerville the smallest (4 km²).
