About Queensland

Queensland has 78 local government areas and about 5,669,764 people (2025) on 1,730,171 km² (668,022 sq mi). Brisbane is both the capital and the largest city, with 2,287,896 people (2021). It borders New South Wales, South Australia and Northern Territory.

Brisbane is the most populous local government area (1,375,301 people) and Diamantina the least (265); Cook is the largest by area (105,718 km²) and Weipa the smallest (10 km²).
