About Tasmania

Tasmania has 29 local government areas and about 576,261 people (2025) on 68,018 km² (26,262 sq mi). Hobart is both the capital and the largest city, with 197,451 people (2021).

Launceston is the most populous local government area (71,341 people) and Flinders the least (924); West Coast is the largest by area (9,584 km²) and Hobart the smallest (78 km²).
