About Australia
Australia has 8 states and about 27,613,654 people (2025) on 7,687,839 km² (2,968,290 sq mi). The capital is Canberra; the largest city is Sydney, with 4,698,656 people (2021). It borders Papua New Guinea.
New South Wales is the most populous state (8,592,524 people) and Northern Territory the least (264,556); Western Australia is the largest by area (2,526,632 km²) and Australian Capital Territory the smallest (2,358 km²).
