About New South Wales

New South Wales has 129 local government areas and about 8,592,524 people (2025) on 800,798 km² (309,190 sq mi). Sydney is both the capital and the largest city, with 4,698,656 people (2021). It borders Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Australian Capital Territory.

Blacktown is the most populous local government area (449,385 people) and Unincorporated NSW the least (975); Unincorporated NSW is the largest by area (93,209 km²) and Hunters Hill the smallest (6 km²).
