It borders Zurich, Schwyz, Glarus, Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden, Graubünden, Thurgau, Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein.

St. Gallen is the most populous district (128,166 people) and Werdenberg the least (43,008); Sarganserland is the largest by area (518 km²) and Rorschach the smallest (50 km²).
