Learn the capitals of Switzerland’s 26 cantons

Go beyond Switzerland’s national geography and learn the cantonal capitals. Some share a name with their canton, such as Zug, Schwyz and Glarus. Others need a separate association: Aarau belongs to Aargau, Liestal to Basel-Landschaft, and Bellinzona to Ticino.

Start with ten questions, or choose a longer round up to all 26 cantons. The canton outline and city marker help you link the name with its location, rather than memorising a list alone.

Multilingual answers and the Herisau convention

Switzerland’s languages give several cities more than one familiar name. The quiz accepts Lucerne or Luzern, Geneva or Genève, Bern or Berne, Chur or Coire, and Sion or Sitten. Accents are optional when typing.

For Appenzell Ausserrhoden, this quiz asks for Herisau, the seat of the government and parliament. Trogen has a historic and judicial role; the canton’s capital arrangements are more nuanced than a simple single-capital label. Appenzell is the separate answer for Appenzell Innerrhoden.
