The Canton of Nidwalden has 11 municipalities and about 45,664 people (2025) on 241 km² (93 sq mi). Stans is both the capital and the largest city, with 8,565 people. It borders Bern, Lucerne, Uri, Schwyz and Obwalden.
Stans is the most populous municipality (8,565 people) and Emmetten the least (1,691); Wolfenschiessen is the largest by area (93 km²) and Stansstad the smallest (9 km²).
