About New York

New York has 62 counties, 62 cities, 532 villages and 697 Census-designated communities, and about 20,002,427 people (2025 estimate) on 122,049 km² (47,123 sq mi) of land. The capital is Albany; the largest city is New York, with 8,584,629 people. It borders Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Vermont, and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Québec.

Kings County is the most populous county (2,653,963 people) and Hamilton County the least (5,006); St. Lawrence County is the largest by land area (6,940 km²) and New York County the smallest (59 km²).
