About Massachusetts

Massachusetts has 14 counties, 54 cities, 293 towns and 190 Census-designated communities, and about 7,154,084 people (2025 estimate) on 20,204 km² (7,801 sq mi) of land. Boston is both the capital and the largest city, with 672,973 people. It borders Connecticut, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Middlesex County is the most populous county (1,669,979 people) and Nantucket County the least (14,758); Worcester County is the largest by land area (3,913 km²) and Nantucket County the smallest (120 km²).
