About the Mediterranean

The Mediterranean has 22 countries, home to about 548.5 million people across 8,795,107 km² (3,395,808 sq mi).

The largest country by area is Algeria, at 2,381,740 km², about 27% of the total; the smallest is Monaco, at 2 km².

Egypt has the most people, about 112.9 million (21% of the total), and Monaco the fewest, about 32,047. The most densely populated is Monaco, with about 16,024 people per km².

1 of the 22 countries is landlocked: Palestine.

The 22 countries with a coastline on the Mediterranean Sea: Albania, Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Morocco, Palestine (the Gaza Strip), Slovenia, Spain, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey. Portugal, North Macedonia and Jordan are often called Mediterranean but have no Mediterranean coast, so they are shown as neighbours.
