About Africa

Africa has 54 countries, home to about 1.53 billion people across 30,316,247 km² (11,705,164 sq mi).

The largest country by area is Algeria, at 2,381,740 km², about 8% of the total; the smallest is Seychelles, at 455 km².

Nigeria has the most people, about 244.3 million (16% of the total), and Seychelles the fewest, about 98,187. The most densely populated is Mauritius, with about 643 people per km².

16 of the 54 countries are landlocked: Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, South Sudan, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
