About Europe

Europe has 47 countries, home to about 827.2 million people across 23,883,367 km² (9,221,416 sq mi).

The largest country by area is Russia, at 17,098,242 km², about 72% of the total; the smallest is Vatican City, at 0.44 km².

Russia has the most people, about 140.1 million (17% of the total), and Vatican City the fewest, about 1,000. The most densely populated is Monaco, with about 16,024 people per km².

15 of the 47 countries are landlocked: Andorra, Austria, Belarus, Czech Republic, Hungary, Kosovo, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Moldova, North Macedonia, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland and Vatican City.
