About the Southwest
The US Census Bureau does not define a Southwest. This map follows the five regions taught in US geography, as National Geographic draws them: Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Wider definitions add Nevada, Utah, Colorado and Southern California.
The Southwest has about 45,582,425 people (2025 estimate) on 1,462,915 km² (564,834 sq mi) of land. Its largest city is Houston, Texas, with 2,397,315 people.
Texas is the most populous state (31,709,821 people) and New Mexico the least (2,125,498); Texas is the largest by land area (676,686 km²) and Oklahoma the smallest (177,664 km²).
