About Lower Austria

Lower Austria has 24 districts and about 1,729,541 people (2026) on 19,180 km² (7,405 sq mi). St. Pölten is both the capital and the largest city, with 60,112 people. It borders Burgenland, Upper Austria, Styria, Vienna, Czechia and Slovakia.

Baden is the most populous district (150,523 people) and Waidhofen an der Ybbs the least (11,053); Zwettl is the largest by area (1,400 km²) and Krems an der Donau the smallest (52 km²).
