Find Austria’s nine Bundesländer

Austria has nine federal states, also called federal provinces or Bundesländer. Vienna is both the national capital and one of these states. Its small area sits inside Lower Austria, so zoom in to distinguish the city-state from its much larger neighbour.

Work from west to east: Vorarlberg borders Lake Constance, Tyrol stretches through the Alps, and Salzburg lies farther east. Carinthia occupies the south, with Styria beside it and Burgenland along the eastern edge.

Recognise English and German state names

This quiz uses English names where they differ: Lower Austria is Niederösterreich, Upper Austria is Oberösterreich, Carinthia is Kärnten, Styria is Steiermark and Vienna is Wien. Tyrol is written Tirol in German.

North Tyrol and East Tyrol are separated geographically but belong to the same state, so either part counts as Tyrol. The state of Salzburg is larger than the city of Salzburg; this round tests the state’s whole outline rather than a city location.
