Learn Austria’s nine state capitals

Austria’s states are called Bundesländer. This quiz connects each state outline with its capital, from Bregenz beside Lake Constance to Eisenstadt in Burgenland. Every standard round covers all nine states, so you can learn the whole set in a short session.

Some pairings are easy to overlook: Lower Austria’s capital is St. Pölten, not Vienna, and Graz is the capital of Styria. Vienna is both Austria’s national capital and a federal state in its own right.

English and German names both work

Type Vienna or Wien. For St. Pölten, Sankt Pölten and spellings with oe instead of ö are accepted. Klagenfurt am Wörthersee also works for Klagenfurt.

The map dot marks the capital while the silhouette shows the state. Tyrol’s separated northern and eastern parts remain one state, with Innsbruck as the answer. Try multiple choice first, then typed answers when you are ready to recall the names without suggestions.
