About Wales

Wales has 22 principal areas and about 3,175,181 people (2025) on 20,737 km² (8,007 sq mi). Cardiff is both the capital and the largest city, with 348,535 people (2021). It borders England.

Cardiff is the most populous principal area (381,516 people) and Merthyr Tydfil the least (58,362); Powys is the largest by area (5,181 km²) and Blaenau Gwent the smallest (109 km²).
