About Maine

Maine has 16 counties, 23 cities, 459 towns and 132 Census-designated communities, and about 1,414,874 people (2025 estimate) on 79,888 km² (30,845 sq mi) of land. The capital is Augusta; the largest city is Portland, with 69,911 people. It borders New Hampshire, and the Canadian provinces of Québec and New Brunswick.

Cumberland County is the most populous county (317,222 people) and Piscataquis County the least (17,409); Aroostook County is the largest by land area (17,278 km²) and Sagadahoc County the smallest (658 km²).
