About Turkey
Turkey has 81 provinces and about 86,092,168 people (2025) on 780,230 km² (301,248 sq mi). The capital is Ankara; the largest city is Istanbul, with 15,382,791 people. It borders Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Georgia, Greece, Iran, Iraq and Syria.
Istanbul is the most populous province (15,754,053 people) and Bayburt the least (82,836); Konya is the largest by area (40,838 km²) and Yalova the smallest (818 km²).

Populations are TurkStat's Address Based Population Registration System figures for 31 December 2025. A town's figure is its province or district centre (il/ilçe merkezi) as TurkStat counts it. In the 30 metropolitan provinces every district is counted as urban, and TurkStat gives no figure for the city itself: a city such as Istanbul, Ankara or İzmir is the sum of its central districts (Istanbul: every district but Çatalca, Silivri and Şile), and the larger districts outside it are shown on their own. Each town is placed at the centre of its district (a city at the centre of its central districts), not at the town itself. Province areas are computed from the boundaries on an equal-area projection; TurkStat publishes no province area table.
